What is AAALAC?
AAALAC International is a private, nonprofit organization that promotes the humane treatment of animals in science through voluntary accreditation and assessment programs.
Why is AAALAC accreditation important?
AAALAC accreditation demonstrates UW–Madison’s commitment to maintaining high standards of animal care, complying with established guidelines, and continuously improving our practices. It reflects our dedication to responsible, ethical, and high quality research.
When is AAALAC visiting?
The AAALAC site visit team will review our program in September, October, or November 2026. We are currently working with AAALAC to confirm the exact dates and expect to have this information in late summer 2026.
How does AAALAC evaluate our program?
AAALAC International conducts a comprehensive evaluation that includes:
- A review of our Program Description, which outlines every component of our animal care and use program.
- Walk throughs of all animal facilities including lab-managed spaces.
- Conversations with members of our research community, which are a key part of the assessment.
During these conversations, be prepared to discuss:
- The work you perform with animals
- The training you have received
- How you ensure safety while conducting animal procedures
